BOOK REVIEW: The House of Hades

I've been reading Rick Riordan's books ever since he came out with Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief and I'm glad that my daughter collects the books also. No, I did not influence her with her choice of titles but happy to note that she has a good eye when it comes to books.

For those of you who is not familiar with Hades, he is the Lord of the Underworld a.k.a. Pluto. No, not the pet of Mickey Mouse. Anyways, Hades is the Greek name of Pluto, Pluto is the Roman name of Hades. Capisce?

OOTD: My Not-So-Little Fashionista

Years ago when my daughter Isabel was just in Prep 1, people ask her what she wants to be when she grows up. This was her answer then- A fashion designer. Okay! That was weird since I am a bit conservative when it comes to my outfits and most often just wore what's readily available on the closet even if it doesn't match- hahaha. My hubby's like that also.

PARENTING 101: Who's Itchy?

As far as I can remember, we've been patronizing this brand of "anti-itchy" cream because my daughter always seem to have a red insect bite on her arm or leg. Its not that she rolls on the floor or something but maybe because she just smells nice to be bitten.

Anyways, she happen to wake up in the middle of the night the other day and there were red marks on her arms and legs. She shares our bed so I don't really have any idea why she gets this bite marks on her when we don't. As usual, I gave her the "anti-itchy" cream which she generously spread on the red spots in her body.

Then early this morning, I remembered to ask her about her bite marks and if she was itchy again last night since I came home late. She happily told me that all the red marks are gone thanks to the Virgin Coconut Oil that her Dad gave her. Huh?!

SM Sta Mesa Heralds In The Christmas Cheer

Christmas is for children so what better way to begin the Christmas Festivities at SM Sta Mesa than inviting some Philippine Society for Orphan Disorders (PSOD) children along with their families for a short program, putting up the "star" on the Christmas Tree and of course, gift giving and some sweet snacks to cap off the event.

ANIME REVIEW: Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

This is an old anime OVA (original video anime) that was shown in 2004 in Japan. This 3 episode series was also shown in the U.S.A. and Canada in 2007 and 2008 respectively. The Anime Cartoon Network added the series to its list in 2010. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Portrait_de_Petit_Cossette

The poster is nice also, it made me think of Victorique de Blois in Gosick.

SALE ALERT: This is For Book Lovers

I've always love reading books and I grew up in a home literally filled with books that one day, my father and mother decided to open up a library in our province simply because our house was overflowing with books. And now that I have a family of my own, the scenario is still the same. Hubby loves books, daughter loves books and I love books. Going to the mall for us is not complete without going to the bookstore and buying a book, or two, or three.

So here's the exciting part, everyone is invited to the warehouse sale of National Bookstore this coming November 14-19, 2013. I always have fond memories of my previous NBS sale especially if I happen to find a title that I really, really like and that it costs like P100 or even less.

Smart 4G LTE Leads In Coverage

Wireless services leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is expanding further its fourth-generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) network which already has  over 1,000 sites covering 180 cities and municipalities, including  Metro Manila, as well as areas in North Luzon, South Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.

LTE is currently the fastest commercially available 4G wireless broadband service.  Smart introduced LTE in the Philippines in August 2012 and has since been rolling out the service in more areas of the country.

Smart is the only operator to provide 4G LTE coverage  for mobile users in Caloocan, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Navotas, Paranaque, Pasay, Pateros and Valenzuela.

Smart is also the only network to offer 4G LTE services in key areas in Albay, Bataan, Batangas, Benguet, Camarines Sur, Masbate, Mindoro Oriental, Pangasinan, Quezon and Zambales.

Moreover, Smart is the sole 4G LTE provider in Capiz, Iloilo, Leyte and Negros Oriental in the Visayas, and Misamis Oriental and Zamboanga Del Sur in Mindanao.

“Our 4G LTE rollout is the cutting edge of our wireless broadband offerings. This technology platform offers our subscribers the best high-speed, multi-media mobile internet experience," said Rolando G. Peña, head of technology services at PLDT and Smart.

"If we count as well our HSPA+ and Wi-Max services,  Smart offers the most extensive wireless broadband coverage for both fixed and mobile applications.  All of these services are powered by superior fiber optic transmission network of PLDT and Smart, which is the most powerful and pervasive in the country," he added.

Moreover, Smart is upping the ante by being the first to conduct tests of LTE Advanced,  the next stage of development of LTE. In the past three months, the mobile operator   has already tested LTE Advanced in Manila, Davao City and Boracay, Aklan.

"LTE Advanced is capable of delivering data speeds of from 200 to 700 mega bytes per second  (Mbps). This will open up new possibilities for mobile internet service, especially in multi-media and video applications," Pena said.

Smart’s expanded  4G LTE coverage is supported by the domestic fiber optic cable network of PLDT and Smart which is now over 71,000 kilometers long, as well as PLDT's extensive international cable networks. [END]

Global Visas - Making Dreams Come True

Have you ever tried getting a work visa but felt so overwhelmed with the requirements and procedures that when you finally reached the in-person interview, you felt you gave a bad impression? Or even worst, has your visa application been rejected because you lack the necessary requirements? The steps to obtain a visa are tedious; the requirements are extensive. Each person's situation is different and there is no proper explanation or a single document, certificate, or letter which can guarantee visa issuance.

But with all these complexities and uncertainties, why do Filipinos leave the country in the first place? Why spend so much money applying for a visa when there’s an oft chance that their visa application might be rejected? The simple truth is that Filipinos have more job opportunities abroad. Other countries pay better and provide better benefit. The minimum wage in the Philippines is quite low compared to other countries while local companies do not compensate their employees well. There are also those workers who do not find their salaries enough to sustain them and their families. It is for this reason that Filipinos travel out of the country in order to get better compensations.

Nintendo Kid

I grew up playing Nintendo. It used to be called- "Game & Watch" back then and one game is one unit. So if you want to play three different games, you need to buy all three units. Famous game back then was Donkey Kong.

photos from www.pocketgamer.co.uk

I can't remember the game called "Ball," which happen to be the first photo but I remember playing "Parachute." There were others as well like- Egg, Octopus, Fireman, etc. Then Nintendo came up with the double screen version and the mini game & watch.

A lot of adults now (like me) grew up playing those games and now, new and improved versions of the Nintendo are being played by our children. There's the Gameboy, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, etc.

Then I happen to read this in the news today that Mr. Hiroshi Yamauchi, who used to managed the company passed away. You can read the article -- here. He is the force behind the success of our much love game. Rest in Peace, Mr. Yamauchi.

Ultimart and Liliw Shopping Challenge

Sundays for me are usually reserved for my family, waking up late and eating brunch together then going to the church and mall afterwards. But today- I, along with 11 other bloggers were treated to a Food & Cultural Tour hosted by The Aristocrat Group which also includes a 30-minute shopping challenge at Ultimart in San Pablo City and Liliw, Laguna respectively.

It is my first time to join this kind of event and have a chance to bond and get-to-know my fellow bloggers. The long trip was filled with tales and laughter (and food), some trivia and gossip, and all the things that happen during a fieldtrip ride including taking a nap, bumpy roads, and traffic. But it was really fun.

BOOK REVIEW: City Of Bones

Years ago, I used to choose what books are suitable for my daughter to read. Now, its the other way around. She's been bugging me for ages to read --- City of Bones even before the movie. I think she read all four books and is waiting for the last installment. Then she and her ninang scheduled a movie date for City of Bones but it didn't push thru since the Metropolis was flooded with moonsoon rains and her ninang lives in Cavite. Luckily, one of her BFFs lives nearby so they scheduled a movie date- chaperoned by her friend's mom and achie.

At last, I have found the time to read the book and I can say I'm hooked. I'm now reading the second installment. But will talk about the City of Bones first.

The Saviour (Ang Tagapagligtas) at The 13th Gwangju International Film Festival

On September 1, 2013, the Indie Film- Ang Tagapagligtas is this year's entry to the 13th Gwangju Film Festival in Seoul, South Korea. The story is about a man who is known as Kristong Hari in his neighborhood and who walks on foot every year during the procession of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo.

Faith and Armageddon
text and photos by Boy Villasanta

My new documentary film, “Ang Tagapagligtas (The Savior)” tells of a megalomaniac impersonator of Christ the King, the seventy four-year old Lauro Gonzales who conveniently left his comfort zone three decades ago to fulfill his promise of saving the world from decay and destruction as he was, according to him, possessed by the Black Nazarene of Quiapo Church in the city of Manila.

Feminine Confidence

Just the other day, I received a gift pack of pH Care Feminine Wipes for product review. I must say that the timing was perfect because I have my "monthly visitor" that time and its really uncomfortable especially when I ran errands the whole day.

Feeling clean and fresh is a must for me and this wipes helped a lot. Its like being able to "wash" the feminine area without water that's not really handy especially if you're in the mall, school, grocery, office.

Idyllic Calatagan

Calatagan, Batangas is one of the places here in Luzon that I would love to visit again and again if possible. The journey may be long and tiring but there's excitement upon reaching the place. It has a lot of interesting shoreline, hillside and just plain greens. I also love the fact that there are so many things to discover and do here. The people are also friendly and full of tales.

The Lighthouse of Calatagan also know as: Punta de Santiago, Faro de Santiago, Cape Santiago or even plain "parola." This was constructed in 1890 and was named Punta or Faro de Santiago since it was Don Santiago Zobel who donated the land where it stood. Reference: Calatagan Lighthouse Punta de Santiago

PTT's 2nd Tree Planting at Bataan National Park

PTT revives denuded forest in Bataan; 300 volunteers join 2nd leg of tree-planting

Because of illegal logging, a large part of the forest within the Bataan National Park lost its precious trees. But thanks to PTTPC, DENR, National Commission for Indigenous People, the National Research Council of the Philippines, the Bataan Peninsula State University, Mga Bayani ng Kalikasan, Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA), Municipality of Morong, Bataan and Wide Out Technology, the denuded forest is slowly turning green again as 300 volunteers trekked the mountain last July 27 to plant more seedlings.

Excerpts from the Welcome Remarks of PTTPC President and CEO Wisarn Chawalitanon:

Today, we are embarking on yet another worthy undertaking aligned to our vision of helping preserve the environment. It is PTT Philippines' way of giving back to our mother earth and to the Philippines for embracing us become one with the Filipino community.

As everyone knows, PTT is a Thai-owned company that came here in the Philippines not only to do business but is committed to be with Filipino people in nation-building. This led us to create the PTT Philippines Foundation in 2007 for us to take an active role in community development, including the protection and preservation of the environment.

He compared the many similarities of the Filipinos with the Thai and that motivated the PTT group to do business here, as well as push their "Gas Up For A Tree" Project.

Since our launching in May, when we made our first tree-planting activity in this area, we now have close to 1,000 growing trees here. Thanks to our stakeholders and supporters for helping us make this endeavor possible. I am particularly referring to our partners from the national and local government, the NGOs, the Diplomatic Community, our Aeta Brothers from the Magbukun Tribe, all other volunteers including our own employees, and the consumers, especially those motorists who visited our service stations and committed themselves to plant at least one tree for their P1,000 gas up.

Let us continue doing our share for this. Nobody would love our abode. Nobody would love our environment. Nobody would take care of our Mother Earth-- but us. Therefore, it is a great challenge for us to take the lead in protecting and preserving the environment.

Himno Nacional Filipino

The Philippine National Anthem In Spanish

I had goosebumps while listening to the original version in Spanish. This was the song that my grandfather used to hum (or so I was told by my aunt) during the pre-war years.

A Story That Warms The Heart

I chance upon the story of Emerson Paguia on the internet the other day. His tale is one of determination to achieve one's goals in life and he made it and became successful.

Nowadays, there are people who just simply stop reaching for their goals because life is hard and they eventually give up. But with these kind of stories like that of Emerson Paguia, I think there is the positive message here that thru hard work and perseverance, nothing is impossible.

Read his story here.

Art Sculptures Await Ironman Champions

The victory of being the strongest and fastest among the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines contenders shall come with an exceptional trophy envisioned by internationally renowned designer Kenneth Cobonpue, and crafted by the metal artisans of Suarez and Son.

The trophies feature flowing metal figures, which showcase the three categories in triathlon. These perfectly represent the movement involved in the sport, and each is plated with gold, silver, and bronze. The figures rest on a wooden base for the female division and on a metal base for the male division.

And since this year's Ironman shall be held in Mactan Shangri-La on August 4, it is fitting to showcase the artistry of these world-class Cebuanos through these commemorative prizes.

I.T. Competition for Intelligent Trip-Planning by the DOTC

July 1, 2013

THE PHILIPPINE TRANSIT APP CHALLENGE:
I.T. COMPETITION FOR INTELLIGENT TRIP-PLANNING BY THE DOTC

Manila, Philippines – The launch of the first national transport application (app) development competition led by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) will be heldtomorrow2 July 2013, in partnership with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Cebu City Government.

In a move to maximize the conveniences made possible by modern technology in delivering its services to the people, the transport agency is opening its database on bus, train, and jeepney routes in Metro Manila, called the Philippine Transit Information Service (PTIS), to the public, via the Philippine Transit App Challenge.

The competition will be a three (3)-month long hack-at-home event – a new trend in the IT community which allows software developers to create apps at their own pace and on their own time, using the same datasets provided to them.  Based on the international experience, hack-at-home events lead to the development of a broad spectrum of apps, many of which were not previously conceived and which give end-users a wide range of products to utilize and enjoy.

“We are very excited about the Challenge and we expect it to bring out a lot of innovation from software developers.  The goal is to create all sorts of apps which will make commuting in Metro Manila much more convenient,” said DOTC spokesperson Migs Sagcal.

The PTIS database contains previously-unavailable data gathered from participating agencies such as the MMDA, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3), the Philippine National Railways (PNR), the Land Transportation Franchising & Regulatory Board (LTFRB), and the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM).

It will contain two (2) kinds of datasets: regularly-updated geographic location and service information on bus, train, and jeepney routes in Metro Manila, as well as live traffic incident data streams in both Metro Manila and Cebu City.

This means that the commuters will now be able to easily check the various routes available to take from one point to another, including how many transfers each route will require, how much fare will be needed, and how much travel time will be involved.  This will allow the public to make better-informed decisions when they plan their trips, resulting in more convenience and efficiency, and a better passenger experience overall.

“The point is to empower the public with better decision-making abilities using our data.  This project stems from government’s effort to look at public service delivery from the viewpoint of the end-user, and to make commuting better for everyone,” Sagcal remarked.

The Philippine Transit App Challenge, which will be open to all interested app developers, will be launched at the Toyota Auditorium of the University of the Philippines’ Asia Learning Center in Diliman, Quezon City, on 2 July 2013 at 9:30am.  More details about the event are available on the competition’s official website, http://philippine-transit.hackathome.com/.

DOTC To Make Commuting In Metro Manila More Convenient

June 30, 2013

Manila, Philippines – An exhaustive, two (2)-year effort to gather and organize previously-unavailable data on buses, jeepneys, and trains in Metro Manila has been completed by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), now making it possible for commuters to plan their trips more efficiently and conveniently.

The initiative of building the Philippine Transit Information Service (PTIS) began in 2011, at a time when the Transport agency could not immediately provide certain essential information to commuters, such as the best route to take at a particular time, as well as the travel times involved.

“The need to gather reliable data at that time in order to deliver convenient and efficient services to the public was immediately recognized and pursued,” explained DOTC spokesperson Migs Sagcal.

Using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, the DOTC gathered data on more than nine hundred (900) bus, train, and jeepney routes.  It also collected useful information such as the fares and amounts of time required to take these various modes of transport.

Following this, the data was organized and analyzed by the DOTC along with other concerned offices such as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Land Transportation Franchising & Regulatory Board (LTFRB), the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), and the Metro Rail Transit Corporation (MRTC).

As a result, it will now be possible to find out what a commuter’s options are to get from one point to another in Metro Manila, what types of transportation and how many transfers will be involved, and how much money and time each option will require.

“Our next step is to make the PTIS accessible to the public.  The intention has always been to use modern technology in empowering people to make well-informed decisions on their commute,” added Sagcal.

The two (2)-year data gathering and analysis effort was made possible by a grant from the World Bank, which also funded a similar project of the Cebu City Government to make its traffic management efforts more advanced.

The DOTC, MMDA, and the Cebu City Government will be hosting a three month-long competition called the Philippine Transit App Challenge along with other government agencies beginning this month, where individuals and groups mainly from the Information Technology (IT) industry will compete to develop applications using the PTIS database, which the public may then use to choose their best routes at any given time.
